2 modems one line

hi
can anyone help, a friend of mine has a problem they want 2 pcs to be hooked up to the internet, via a cable modem, the problem is the modem only goes into the back of the pc via a USB line, no utp connections in back of modem.
But they have been sent 2 modems so my question is can i hook up the two modems into each pc and be able to get online with them both? via a telephone extension.
if not what would be the easiest way to get both pc's networked up and get online? i cannot get a router because of the usb connection!!

Re: 2 modems one line

You need to explain in a lot more detail what the situation is. Who is supplying the service? It cannot be NTL from my reading of your post. What make and model are the cable modems?

Re: 2 modems one line

there are 2 pcs one is connected to a tiscali modem theres a line going into the modem via a telephone socket, and the only other socket on it is a printer type cable going into the pc via a USB connection.
so it cannot connect to a router!!

if they got a modem/router would this be able to link the two's, if so what model could they get, for it to run on tiscali b/b.

and like i said in my earlier post they also have 2 of these modems

the modem model is Sagem Fast 800 E2T

Re: 2 modems one line

You are going to need to get a new ADSL modem and router (combined) or two separate products.

Re: 2 modems one line

You used to be able to get a USB router that took the USB output from your modem but this was discontinued http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2200usb.html . Perhaps there are other USB routers about.

You could replace the supplied ADSL modems with a combined ADSL modem/router. There are many about but never having an ADSL connection with more than one PC I have no experience with them. A couple are mentioned in the link I just provided.

This thread needs moving to the correct forum are as it is not a NTL broadband issue.

Re: 2 modems one line

Re: 2 modems one line

No.

You could connect one PC to one modem and then share the connection with the other PC (ethernet card in each with Xover cable).

Obtain a USB router without inbuilt modem to connect after one of the modems with each computer connecting to the router. Keep second modem as a spare or sell it.

Obtain a combined modem/router and keep modems for spares in case router fails or sell them on.

Re: 2 modems one line

you could always connect one pc via the modem then either get 2 wireless cards one for each pc or 2 bluetooth adapters & connect the pc's together wirelessly & share the connection that way. (gives you more options & no wires trailing between the pc's)

Is there a worthwhile market for this? I have a USB ADSL modem that Demon gave me, is it worth money?

Doubt it but maybe worth sticking it on Ebay. There is probably someone out there who thinks he can get free extra bandwidth by sticking two modems on his phoneline.

Re: 2 modems one line

I use Bluetooth & get a nice speed 700k find thats quite fast enough, plus i don't get the security problems that a couple of friends have had with wifi

Not when you can pick up wi-fi cards for the same price.
