New M25 lower Thames crossing announced
Well it's been a long time coming and is well overdue but I'll believe it when I drive on it.
Quote:
The route of a road leading to a new tunnel under the Thames Estuary has been revealed as the most expensive option, going through greenbelt land.
The chosen option "C" will see a new road link the M25, near North Ockendon, Essex, with the A2 near Shorne, Kent.
It will cross the A13 at Orsett, and will connect land east of Tilbury to land east of Gravesend.
A new road will then take traffic to the A2, near Thong, via the Western Southern Link.

I think we might have another convoluted London airport style planning process on our hands here - nice work for all those concultants...

Re: New M25 lower Thames crossing announced
About time. Although I would have preferred they build a bridge parallel to the QEII to connect to where the Northbound M25 road currently goings into the tunnel. Keeping the tunnel under the bridge as an option to relieve pressure when the bridges closes due to winds/whatever.
Can't quite get into my head how this one will work. It seems to simply be taking demand off the M25 by diverting traffic that would normally be heading into London by getting north of the river before existing the M25? Now they'll be leaving before the tunnel?
Oh they've added a map:

Re: New M25 lower Thames crossing announced
I bet there'll be a temporary toll to help recover the costs just like there was for the Dartford Crossing...
Anyway by the time they get it done the tunnels at Dartford are, apparently, going to need replacing so M25 users can't celebrate less congestion just yet.

Re: New M25 lower Thames crossing announced
Bridges have their disadvantages - try crossing at Dartford when it's windy. It'll be interesting to see what they do about that when the tunnels are being rebuilt - a long detour to the new crossing via roads which are already congested.

Re: New M25 lower Thames crossing announced
It was practically a foregone conclusion that the next crossing would be option 'C' given the amount of infrastructure that they have been building along that North Kent area. The A2 from the M25 out to Kent has been massively over-engineered but now with the new crossing planned for there it all makes sense.

Re: New M25 lower Thames crossing announced
The map makes it seem like a hell of a diversion. I trust that's where they think the main volume of traffic is coming from rather than people further down the M25 heading up....

Well for one thing, it's a better way of getting to the channel ports if you are coming from Essex etc.

Freight traffic heading to/from regions north of London via the channel will be a major user of the new route I'd have thought.

Off topic posts removed, this is about a new crossing, not the EU.
