Connecting a switch to a switch

Hello,

I have bought a house with 4 bedrooms and a person is going to be living in each one. i want each bedroom to be able to connect more than one device to the network at the same time.

What i have is a router connected to the internet, then this router connects to a switch. A crossover cable then connects Each room to this switch where the person in the room will then connect another switch to the other end and so connect there devices into there own little switch they have in there room.

***My question is, am i correct in using a crossover Ethernet cable to connect these two switches together? Will connecting the rooms together like this be ok or would there of been a better way to do it?

If you have switches with auto-sensing uplink, you can use a straight through cable rather than a crossover.

Most modern switches/routers will have ALL auto-sensing ports, that said, it isn't a definite, you're safest getting/making a crossover cable as it will then work with all configurations.

4 people each running their own small networks is going to use a lot of electricity, and more importantly bandwidth. Don't be too surprised when they all complain of slow internet speeds

well they will only be running 2 devices in each room and the internet will be 20mb

Doesn't matter, one person running P2P heavily could hose that connection very easily.

but thats a problem any network faces so its not just the way i have set it up.

I suppose you could alsways implement some for of QoS if the router supports it.

No really it works great

Most recent switches are auto sensing and don't care if the cable used is crossover or straight.
Actually some Nic's are autosensing now to, that's pretty neat saves looking for a crossover cable to plug them together,

I managed to connect a macbook to a desktop directly with a patch cable because of that

(I wanted to see if 1 gigabit ethernet was any faster it wasnt due to the macbook was running windows at the time and the AV was scanning everything.)
