Ntl broadband - sharing it with a crossover network between 2 comps

At the moment i have 2 computers connected via a crossover network without a router, and also one of the computers is connected to the internet via ntl broadband with the set top box. However all my attempts to share the internet between the 2 computers have failed how do i do it with NTL as ive heard that NTL doesnt support networks?

I have internet working on 1 computer
Network working between both computers

Ive tried several ips and default gateways each time I try to click share internet access it reverts back to default 192.168.0.1 which disables network.
Any way to get around this without a router

make sure you specify the dns settings of NTL if you are using a static ip

What operating system is it and why are you specifying IP addresses instead of allowing the operating system to do it for you?
