Exclamation Problem installing Linksys WRT54G

Hi;

I tried to install my new Linksys WRT54G last night. Followed the setup wizard and plugged all the cables in. Clicked the next button: it checked my computer settings - fine. Then up popped another screen asking for a password. Whatever password I put in here (my ntl password; 'admin'; blank etc) all that happens is this screen disappears and I back to the previous one where clicking the 'next' button checks my computer settings and asks me for a password.

Tried to install it manually by typing 192.168.1.1 in my browser. While I can wirelessly connect to the router, I don't know the settings to get the router to connect to the internet. Trying to do so just reveals I am connecting with an IP of 0.0.0.0 a subnet of 0.0.0.0 etc.

So: am I doing something wrong on the setup wizard (can't see what)

Or: how do I configure it manually for NTL through my browser and 192.168.1.1. I can get my ip address my using ipconfig, but I don't know where to enter this. Can anybody please please help (and with screenshots if I can be cheeky).

Thanks!

Re: Problem installing Linksys WRT54G

Have you switched (powered) off the cable modem / STB when swapping over from PC to router connection?

Yes - the cable modem learns the MAC address of the box it's connected to during it's power-cycle. If you swap it without power-cycling it then it won't talk.

Re: Problem installing Linksys WRT54G

You dont need to do any off the password things for ntl, infact for wired you need to do nothing!
Heres a run down:
1) Turn off PC - Turn off NTL modem - Turn off router
2) Plug in RJ45 from ntl modem into router instead of PC
3) Pick port 1 2 3 4 on router and plug RJ45 cable from one of these ports into your PC
4) Turn router on and then modem. Go make a cup of tea and leave them for 10mins
5) Turn on PC and if Windows does not do it automatically go to set up networks and set up a new LAN/home network and follow the wizard,
6) Done! Go surfing!

P.s I think you have set it for for ADSL not cable so do a hard reset (reset button on router before you power it down in step 1)

The WRT54G is a cable router - so you don't need to worry about the PS.

Re: Problem installing Linksys WRT54G

Thanks a lot for your help: turning the modem off and then back on again was all I needed to do.

Cheers!
