As said I have never installed DD WRT but I assume the procedure will be similar to installing TomatoUSB.
I agree it does seem daunting but the first time only took around 10 minutes.
I did however make a mistake as the last operation in the sequence was to reset the router and, in my ignorance, I used the reset button when I should have used an 'erase all data in NVRAM' option. The result was that, after a short while, Port Forwarding became unavailable. Just doing the NVRAM thing restored things back to normal.
Also with the Asus router there are options to recover your original firmware. I would be surprised if TP Link are any different.
