Re: Sky changing its Sports Channel

Don't see the big deal , many can get the complete Sky Sports now with very little effort for under what they want to charge for one Sport.

Whilst the entry point to Sport may decrease for those who pay Sky's full subscription charges I'd expect those who want it all to see the complete Sports package increase , possibly approaching £30.

You're talking about the current position, Dave. The pricing will change with the new channel line-up.

We don't know yet whether Sky customers will be charged extra for HD. They may take this opportunity to charge the same as SD but charge more for UHD. After all, times change and HD is now more mainstream.

Re: Sky changing its Sports Channel

I know it's early days, but for me the devil is in the detail of how scheduling will work. It's hard to argue with the idea of more competitive pricing, not paying for sports you don't want etc... however....

Numbered channels give so much flexibility with scheduling. There's times when football, rugby and cricket all go out on SS1, for example. I've seen rugby on at least 4 of the numbered channels at various times. How about when more than one rugby match is shown, but there's no football on. Yes, rugby is my main thing but I do dip into various other sports at times - football's the only thing I would actually avoid.

I could go on - numbered channels allow for all of this. I'm at a total loss how this can work, in reality, on dedicated channels. Quite often the F1 is simulcasted on SS1 for example, and apart from a few motorsport programs that could easily be squeezed in elsewhere on 1-5, it's not as if F1 alone fills the F1 channel.

Time'll tell, but I remain to be convinced.

SKY Sports Mix will continue to operate and could be used as an overflow channel for clashing fixtures. I suspect they will also offer a red button service for each dedicated channel.

Yes, I get that, but (and this is not shooting the messenger, it's shooting the message)...

Sky Sports Mix is a FTA channel, supposedly for tempting non-subscribers with selected stuff.

Red-button is great for when there's genuine overflow, it's not a substitute for putting particular games/matches/events on a proper HD-broadcast channel. Currently numbered channels mean that 6 live events can be "broadcast" simultaneously plus F1.

That doesn't seem to be the case anymore - it also occurred to me last night about how European rugby weekends will be handled, I think the current BT/Sky share certainly has some time to run yet. It's not uncommon for those to spill across 2 Sky channels at the same time.

Re: Sky changing its Sports Channel

Both Sky and Virgin are capable of making HD streams available behind the red button and recordable , Sky do it with UHD already.

I'm not saying whether they will or won't keep charging for HD, I was just pointing out that tbings could change.

What is almost certain is that there will be an additional charge slapped on for UHD.
