Internet Problem

I can't get any websites to load on sometimes and then after a few hours it start working fine again (i'm using a wireless laptop). My Virgin Media modem and router are working fine, as i've tested it with my xbox 360 to go onto xbox live (when it doesnt work with my wireless laptop).

When its not working and I try to go on a website, the 'ready' light flashes, but the message 'Page cannot be displayed' comes and somes times it just says 'done' at the bottom of the browser.

Anyone know what to do do?

The ready light must come on or you will not have a valid connection, my advice would be to call Tech Support when it happens.

------------------------------

Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

I would still call and just have the PC connected when you do and remember it is a free call.

Re: Internet Problem

Does the laptop stay connected through a wired connection? Are you running the latest drivers? Is the wireless signal level usually OK?

Re: Internet Problem

As I read it the problem is restricted to wireless access. Therefore, it's most likely to be a problem with the wireless connection between your lappy and the router.

Things you might check for are:
Someone else nearby using the same channel - try changing channel
You or someone else nearby using a video sender causing interference - try changing channel
A microwave oven nearby causing interference
Poor coupling between the two aerials - move one or both aerials
Still not enough signal - get a better router aerial
Still unreliable - use a cable!

Re: Internet Problem

My internet connection is very slow, I think I need to put the correct settings (correct port settings etc) in my laptop. Anyone know/have the correct settings for a Netgear wnr834b router?

Re: Internet Problem

The tcp/ip settings are:

ipaddress:192.168.1.*
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
default gateway:192.168.1.1

prefered dns:192.168.1.1

* represents a number from 2 to 254.

what do you need to foward ports for

I thought with all routers, you have to set the port settings for all the programs that you use, i.e. MSN Messenger, torrent etc so that you get the right internet speed.

?

Re: Internet Problem

I would think its more likely to be a channel issue or interference issue still if this problem is with the wireless. Have you tried other channels on the router just in case?

My wireless connection is working fine now **touch wood**

But my internet speed is slow when I use my VM modem with my router, without the router the internet speed is fast. So I think I need to put the port forward settings for all the programs (MSN Messenger, Utorrent etc) I use.

Or do I need to do something else?
