Battlefield 4 PC version. reoeated disconnects and occasional lag

One of my sons is reporting fairly frequent disconnects and lagging during game play. (Battlefield Four) Error message is, "You have lost contact with EA servers"

He has a full gaming PC with appropriate, new hardware and software. He uses an ethernet connection and gets full speed, at 386Mb down. Latency is around 15ms in speed tests. His game install is on a 2TB hard drive, not his solid state drive. No problem until the last few weeks. Has something changed server end or has there been a problematic patch?

as far as i am aware there hasn't been a bf4 patch for some time, try updating/rolling back graphics drivers, resetting game settings to defaults etc...
