Wireless setup and printer sharing

I am setting up a wireless network for a friend but I am no expert so I want to get it right first time. I have done a bit of research and decided on Linksys stuff, I need a wired/wireless router near the desktop (hardwired) and a wireless PCMCIA card for her laptop, they need to share a printer but if the desktop is switched off will the laptop be able to print or do I need to buy a printserver router or a seperate printerserver box connected to the router, am a bit confused tbh , thanks in advance

Re: Wireless setup and printer sharing

This sounds pretty much how I have my set up and I have to have my PC switched on when my wife wants to print from her laptop.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but would also appreciate a resolution to this as I am in the market for a new router that can handle my new Wii (link to my thread below), would be great if I could solve this issue at the same time.

Re: Wireless setup and printer sharing

get a print server, this connects the printer to a router, you can get either parral or USB (www.dabs.co.uk)

Using the supplied software this will connect the PC to the printer (Obviously installed on each machine).

So any machine connecting to the router will access the printer

If you choose an ethernet network-ready printer it has an rj45 port you can connect to the router. It gets it's own IP address from the router and becomes accessible from any other pc on the network. In effect it has it's own printer server built in.

Re: Wireless setup and printer sharing

my 'wired' router has a built in usb print server

So I assume a similar option must be available in a 'wireless' one ??

Re: Wireless setup and printer sharing

Would I be able to use a Liknsys USB wireless adapter in for the printer and save buying a printer server ?
