Superhub slow and DoS'able too. SuperDud?

Just read another article about the performance of the SH3 being really bad due to the Puma6 chipset but also seems that firing some TCP or UDP packets at one on different ports make it slow to a crawl.

Effectively you can run a little script which makes a VM customers browsing a complete nightmare.

Maybe fixable with a firmware update but at a loss of functionality. Wonder where this one will go...looks like they need to phase these out really quickly imo.

You can blow Intel-powered broadband modems off the 'net with a 'trivial' packet stream

Why your gigabit broadband lags like hell – blame Intel's chipset

Yep another problem with the puma 6 chipset from Intel.

Arris have now turned to the broadcom chip set for it's next model.

yeah but the problem with that is that if they rush out a shub 4 so that they can get rid of the bad pr from the shub 3 then the shub 4 won't have been developed and tested properly and it will come with its own bag of problems. It is a lose/lose all round unfortunately.

Tbh I think the only way forward is to go with a branded device with original (3rd party) firmware from a company like Linksys or Asus where you know it has been tested robustly. Although it would require some additional training/knowledge on the part of tech support for the additional features (e.g. dns) training can still be streamlined and focused because you will still be supporting the one device.

In fairness to VM, the SH3's problems are all down to the chipset - which is used in many different devices, rather than VM just rushing it out (Though you can argue they shouldn't have let the hub pass trials at all with such a bug). Aside from this issue, I can't complain about my SH3 at all.

There were certainly other questionable bugs noticed in the pilot that questioned the release when it did (who can forget the UPnP issue?), but to be fair to them, this wasn't noticed by anyone till recently and only really by chance trying to fathom out the latency issue.

As far as the chipset, it seems from reading that the tests, if they even exist aren't really as stringent as they should be. Hopefully something good comes from it though!

Re: Superhub slow and DoS'able too. SuperDud?

I watched a streamer brought down several times because of this issue with Puma6. He eventually had to use a VPN to avoid the idiot bringing him down.

When was this as this specific issue has only come to light recently?

I'd also love to know this, I suspect it was just a regular DoS rather than a Puma specific one. Not hard to DoS most come connections.

Yep, streamers are quite often targeted and always have been, regardless of the setup.
