Just updated n it Crapola!

Hi Good folks.
My very first complaint about Virgin Media. Been with old NTLWorld ever since it started from day one, on the Hill in Swansea. Never a Complaint. Until now that is.

What the Heck is wrong with Virgin Media. I was on 30MB with NEVER a problem..I get updated three days ago to the new 60MB and my Download/Upload is like a Berserk piece of Rubbish..One minute I get 15.4 down/1.95 up---Then I get 22.27 down/2.49 up. Then I get for about one hour 7.16 down/3.52 up---Then 15 minutes later I get 4.65 down/1.66 up....
Then I get 57.38 down/2.87 up. Then Down..Down...Down. but never back up.
I'm on the Shrub1 I think....I did change to the wireless frequ of 5ghz with wireless mode Up to 300mbps greenfield ON....Was Rubbish so changed back to 2.4ghz...Active channel keeps changing from high to low each day. On 1+5 at moment...I really need Help from you before I either tell VM to shove it or put me back to 30mb and give me rebate. Any Good settings you recommend I will follow. THanks...Not Downloading. Just on internet on facebook etc with my Photography..Cheers--Dennis

Re: Just updated n it Crapola!

I will make this quick and simple because I need to fly to work. Based on the above I am assuming that all the speed tests you have been doing are on wireless. You won't see many posts about it now because things have moved on but to cut a long story short, the wireless on shub1 is next to useless and it is something which they never fixed and it is particularly apparent when trying to achieve higher speeds. It either just won't reach them or if it is does, it is very unstable and just conks out.
There are two solutions to your problem. Firstly for diagnostic purposes you should run your speeds using a direct wired connection and I ideally use this all the time anyway instead of wireless. I am very confident that if you did this you would see your connection is a solid 60/3 and it is the wireless which is causing the issue and not your external VM connection. Secondly, if wireless is the way to go you need to ring up VM and moan your ass off and they should send you a shub2 for free (far better wireless) but you'll probably have to pay £6 postage, or you can put your shub1 in modem mode and but yourself a proper router.

Re: Just updated n it Crapola!

Wireless is likely the issue. Do wired tests before making any decisions otherwise.

Also I'm surprised you're on 60, 30 moves to 50 and 60 moves to 100. I suspect you're actually on 50.

Re: Just updated n it Crapola!

OK--So I'm Lost--Totally Lost...Yes I know it is a Wireless Router/Modem....
BUT--I have two PCs attached via Wire, a Gigabit USB 4 port Network Server attached via Wire. Router is 1 ft away from them all.
Only things that uses Wireless are both my printers, Samsung s3 phone and Samsung Tab.
Everything worked Brilliantly for Years on the 30mb with no problems. I get up to 52mb after midnight for a few hours. But I need it before midnight 7 days a week..I don't mind the darn thing dropping to 30mb if I'm only surfing the internet. But if I was ONLY surfing the internet I would not need 300 or 60 would I...If I switch from 2.4ghz to the 5ghz I get the top blue button flashing and a Blue button on bottom flashing...So is there a secret to this or is VM telling us Lies and they can't keep up with demand...If that is the case I will ask to go back to 30mb.. So, how do you do Wired test ? how do you do it with wireless switched off in modem.?? THANKS..

Okay, part of the confusion here is you stating tht you switch from 2.4ghz to 5Ghz - this is wireless only. If you're getting slow speeds via wired, that isn't going to make a difference.

So can we clarify - where are you seeing these speed test results and what are you actually doing to get them? Speedtest.net or what?

I always find VM's brentford server on speedtest.net seems to be the most reliable when im testing on a install...

when I say wired I am talking about using one of your pc's which is directly connected (wired) via a patch (Ethernet) cable to the shub and you are not connected by Wi-Fi. Go to speedtest.net and choose the VM server closest to you and run the test. When you do this make sure your pc is the only device using the internet connection and that no one else is downloading something on another pc, spamming facebook on the phone or anything else. Also make sure there aren't any background service running on the pc you using such as torrents or something like windows update doing some downloading. The idea is that you want all the bandwidth which VM have made available to you freed up for the one device you are running the speed test on. Run as many as you like and you can post the results back here. Speedtest.net have a tab where you can copy forum links and posts the results you get directly into this thread.
I suggested VM servers because they are internal servers on VM's network and are going to give you the most reliable result for what your immediate connection is like on your local segment.

Re: Just updated n it Crapola!

OK--THANKS....I use two testers..Speedtest.net & uswitch broadband speed test..Both were, are the same speeds. YES..Both PC's are wired via patch leads as ALWAYS.
Put everything back as they were in the router. Switched off, pulled the plug, 10 min later i switch on, Still the Same.....

Not been on since. Today at 3:00pm I switched on and did two tests via the above mentioned. Glory Be! It was 54.48MBps 3 mbps. Stayed that way so far.
I am aware that if I download it don't affect me, but if I upload more than I should I will be curtailed...I don't do either during the day except if I email a large Tiff photo. Night time is when I do use the internet for other things...I also use the Cloud. Dropbox--OneDrive--Google Drive--Amazon Drive..But not every day....Lets hope this speed stays as is..Will let you know if it don't...By the way, I read most posts in here at least 3 times a week, but first I have posted in Yonks...Thanks for the Help. Appreciated Lots.

Very strange is this...Did a scan on my older Medion PC again and it is reading Ping 15ms Download 37.96--up 3.10. On my New build (self build two years go) I get (not sure if this will show) http://www.speedtest.net/result/4071941164.png

Older PC--
<a href="http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4071945228"><img src="http://www.speedtest.net/result/4071945228.png" /></a>

Now then, not sure if patch leads make a difference...Just checked them, and they be----Blue cat5 patch cable, Yellow 5e, Two Grayish 5 upt, I also got a Black patch 6 here not used, any idea what patch 6 is for. Sorry to be a pest..But very strange for both PCs to show different .

Ok I think I understand why the differences....Bristol, Newport show the same speeds..London is lower. Am I correct. Must learn a bit more on this..I'm wrong..London just showed a high speed. Duh..BAFFLED!!!!

Err your 'old PC' is clearly on a different internet connection seeing as it's ISP is a Scottish server provider.

You probably have it on a VPN or proxy.

no offence but Medion + old = super cack so I wouldn't be surprised if the pc just can't handle the higher throughput and is throttling it.

Still doesn't help that he's testing a different internet connection.

Re: Just updated n it Crapola!

Where did you get the Scotland from....If my older PC can do PSCS5 & Lightroom 5 then there should be nowt wrong with the speed. might be a g not an n inside but that should not make much difference. Anyway, both going well at moment with NO drops in speed. So that's proved you wrong.

Dude you are killing me and your proven lack of knowledge is making it all the more harder to help you. b/g/h/ac relates to wireless specifications and I very much doubt that you have got a wireless nic in your pc. Even if you have and if it is 802.11g as you say, then the most you can achieve speed wise is 20-25mbits. "So that's proved you wrong".

Re: Just updated n it Crapola!

I have just come to a Conclusion....General Maximus, You love ridiculing people who know sod all about routers or just a little about them. I know sod all and don't pretend that I know more than I do.
Thankfully I never had a problem with NTL or VM in over 15 years or more...Until now. But I find without your help that the problem was with VM...You still never told me what the differences are with the Cat cable--cat5, cat5e, cat 6 or the differing colours of the cable.. In Fact, don't bother telling me. Google will know more than you..
gasdfdsaq----Had nothing that said Scotland this way..I'm not as dull as most of you make me out to be...If I had seen Scotland I would not do a test from there. Obvious in it..Well, first time in here in over 6 years..Last as well. Pompus twits..
