It just shows how much they overspent securing most of the EPL TV rights.

Personally I would rather watch EPL however BT Sport is getting some decent rights together now.

Well with the ECL , EL , FA Cup and several other big leagues plus some PL they are becoming a reasonable priced alternative to Sky Sports pricey premium packages.

Very good point. A couple of other Saturday morning points:
I do laugh when I see people complaining that the now have to pay two providers to see "all the football" by which they mean the Premier League. For starters, most Sky Sports subscribers can only watch a fraction of the matches it broadcasts as there just isn't time. Secondly, in the glory days they hark back to, there were far fewer Premier League matches being shown. Up until 2001, just 60 matches were being shown by Sky. In 2001, that figure rose to 110 matches.
There are now some 168 matches being shown and viewers have the choice of taking 42 matches from BT and 126 matches from Sky.
I also laugh when I see people complaining about the regulators requiring matches to be sold to two broadcasters. It is the regulators that did not allow BT to enter the pay TV market until 2001 which it did five years later. If BT had not been banned from providing pay TV services by the regulators, it may well have been bidding for Premier League rights back in the 90s! So I argue that having just one bidder for Premier League rights was in fact a temporary situation created by the regulators.

Sky appear to have bitten off more than they can chew this time. BT must be a real concern for them, as previous competitors just gave up when they realised how much money they would have to invest.

And this seems to confirm it.

In what would be the biggest shock in sports broadcasting since it blew Sky out of the water to land the Champions League, BT was poised to freeze the latter out of showing Real Madrid and Barcelona for the next three years.
Quote:
BT already has Germany’s Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A, France’s Ligue 1 and Portugal’s Primeira Liga and taking their Spanish equivalent in the coming weeks would be a major coup, calling into question Sky’s decision last year to launch a seventh dedicated sports channel in Sky Sports 5 to showcase its European football portfolio.
Quote:
The La Liga rights are the second major property Sky has failed to land since spending an astonishing £4.2 billion to keep hold of the lion’s share of Premier League football.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

surely sky sports cant justify their pricing structure now.

"so 26 quid for sky sports we have all the action!!"
"but you lost champions league, you lost la liga..."
"yeah but we have 160 epl games!!!!!"
"but thats the same number as before ...but youve lost all these other tv deals so surely your price should come down"
"yeah but we have english premier league!!!"
"but your price should now come down as youre offering less for the same amount"
"not listening, not listenINGGGG"
(stubbornly puts hands on ears)

Sky's only showing 116 EPL matches now but this will rise to 126 matches from 2016 and this is where the subscription money all ends up.

Branding Sky Sports 5 as the home of European football must be something Sky regrets as it just illustrates the rights it has lost.

Lol, Yup, I said similar when Sky originally lost the CL rights. I also said numerous times that BT were not the problem for high sports costs. I still believe this to be the case, the ridiculous costs come from Sky not reducing their costs. BT/ESPN/Setenta etc have always offered a cheaper alternative to Sky, but whilst people still pay the prices Sky continue to dictate, it is not going to change.

I hope, that when more sports rights come up for renewal, that the terrestrial channels can agree more deals to share rights to more sports - like the 6 nations deal. Personally, I would love the BBC and C4 to team up for the cricket.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I'd say the bigger issue for Sky with the loss of key sporting rights is it's ability to push through future price increases to fund it's EPL rights. I'd sadly expect non sports customers too see larger than normal increases to foot the bill. Just personal opinion of course.
