They have probably finished. Some people have upgraded to new tariff that's not applicable or have a abnormal code on the account that's stopped the upgrade

I can vouch that this is true.

I'll keep it short and sweet now. The ambit256 is a 4 channel modem and can handle 70mbits no problem; I had mine on 120mbits for ages before I upgraded to 200mbits and needed a shub. Whilst it is more than capable of handling the speed, I am not sure it will actually work. A config file has to be written for it and as this particular model is very old and the 70mbits tier is fairly new, I am not sure they would have written a config file for it. Tbh I would ring customer services tomorrow and pretend you are confused and concerned that it isn't going to work. They'll defo post a new shub out to you and the chances are that they'll also upgrade you over the phone and the speed increase will take effect when you activate and register the shub.
You have done well keeping the ambit256 for this long, it is a cracking mode. I haven't got time to look up your router now so I don't know how old it is. I would definitely check the wan to lan throughput and make sure it can handle the speed increase.
Another word of warning. Once you get the shub, hook it up, register it and let the latest firmware come down, the very first thing your need to do is go into the gui and put it in modem mode so you can continue to use your current router as you are now.
As a further bit of info for you, the maximum downstream rate has nothing to do with what the modem can physically handle, it is the speed VM provision you for which in your case is 20mbits. When you get a shub and the speed increase you will see it change to something like 77000000 for 70mbits even though the shub is good for 400mbits.
no it doesn't

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.
To be honest it wouldn't be far from the truth for me to say I'm confused about this upgrade (i.e. when / will it work) and concerned that the Ambit maybe 256 won't work at the new speed because of config issues (as you say), so I wouldn't have to lie LOL. Yeah I think I'll be phoning Virgin tomorrrow, and asking for the 70 Mpbs and the SHub 2 if possible. I saw in reviews that Shub 2 has very good speed and range, does Simultaneous Dual Band, and has Guest Networks, all things that would be useful to me. The 5Mbps upload would be nice also for when I'm braodcasting on NightSkiesNetwork and so on (Live Telescope views).
Regards,
Alistair G.

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades
yeah, I won't dwell on it but after all this we need to go back to my original post which I deleted The ambit 256 is a single channel modem which can only do ~24mbits maximum so even if there was a 70mbit config file for it (the file that tells the modem what it can do) you would still only get 24mbits. I had the ambit 256 when I was on 20mbits many years ago and moved up to the ambit 300 (what I got confused with) which is a 4 channel modem (good for 200mbits) when 50mbits first came out and I kept that all the way up to 120mbits. For 200mbits plus you need an 8 channel modem (which means a shub) purely for the speed but VM like everyone to have them these days because they are a combi modem/router which makes it easier for VM to troubleshoot if you have any problems.
If you have simple needs then the shubs will suffice but depending what you do on your network (and especially if you are used to having your own router) I would consider investing in a newer and up to date router to compliment the shub in modem mode.

Just had VM doing work in the TS17 area. Having checked the hub page we have gone from 16 DS channels to 24. We are still on 2 US channels at 16 qam. Is this the start (finish?) Of them fixing the high utilisation issues and for the speed upgrade to happen? Also could anyone check to see if these figures are ok?

Cancel Maggie, you'll find your upgrade arrives very quickly, along with a discount. Unfortunately that's the way it is with VM.

I am in the same situation (100 to 150), originally my account promised the upgrade Oct 2015, then Nov 2015, then Feb 2016, Apr 2017 then Feb 2017. I have complained about this to them and managed eventually to get a £10 discount on my bill (I am BB only) for 18 months.
I rang last month about slow speeds which they did actually fix as promised within their stated time frame. I mentioned at the time about the speed increase and he said it would happen (per my account Feb 2017), I would get a new SH (I have a SH1 in modem mode) and no need to re-contract. He sent me a new ethernet cable to try and quell my irritation!
I have no idea whether to believe him or not, time will tell, but I wont be surprised if my account changes to Feb 2020. Hardly worth holding your breath for. When my discount ends I will write a letter of complaint again, that usually gets them on the phone to you..
It is one of my longstanding complaints of being with VM, is that they are not even-handed or even totally honest with their customers. Drives me nuts.

You couldn't make it up my account now says July 2015 to July 2015!
See attachment..
Patrick
.... Later I rang up and had a good moan. I was told that VM no longer offer 150 service, I said why does the Post Code checker say mine is due now and also why did my account say it was due this month but now says July 2015. I was told I could have a free speed upgrade but no new Superhub - I don't think I need one anyway as I use Modem mode, so not too bothered.
As I said above my longstanding complaints of being with VM, is that they are not even-handed or even totally honest with their customers. Why deliberately **** off a happy customer by going back on a promise? makes no sense at all...
No speed upgrade yet - I was told wait 24 hours... I really shouldn't have be dubious about everything I am told by this **** organisation..
While I am at it - what happened about the announcement ages ago that customer superhubs would form part of their wider wifi network.
Its all gone quiet on that front too...
Patrick
