Recording VOD/streaming services.

AIUI, some providers allow customers to record VOD/streaming services.

Is the reason that VM don't offer this down to technical limitations or rights issues?

Would you find this facility useful if it were to be added?

Re: Recording VOD/streaming services.

Why would you ever need to record VOD? The whole point of it is that it's On Demand i.e. accessible whenever you want it.

The only exception is where some providers allow you to temporarily download content to a mobile device for access where you have no data connection (or where you're outside your home country). But that wouldn't be needed for a static PVR box.

Re: Recording VOD/streaming services.

If you're refering to SKY that's because of SKYs system you need to download the VOD content onto your sky+hd box to view it not sure if skyq is the same though.

Re: Recording VOD/streaming services.

Not anymore on Sky Q, there are many VOD items that will just play right away streaming. Rather thn downloading and then playing.

You can bookmark the on demand stuff so it appears in My Shows.

The main advantage is that people would no longer be bound by the limitations of VOD eg time limits on availability, better FF/rewind capabilities etc.

Yes, I've found this to be useful when I've tried to watch something and found that it wasn't yet available.

I can't remember which provider it was; it might not even have been in this country!

Even if you could record VOD for some reason, I don't see it changing the content availability. VOD is only available for certain times as part of the agreement that makes it available in the first place, so there wouldn't be ways to get around any time limit.

Remember Sky have restrictions in place which means if you don't subscribe to the channel you recorded a show from, you can't watch it, so content restrictions aren't new.

With sky you can record loads of movies through the year (without subscription) then subcpscribe for the minimum month and binge watch them.

This doesn't seem to be possible with virgin.

Re: Recording VOD/streaming services.

Our smart TV has the ability to record what is being viewed to a HDD on a USB port. I don't know whether that facility honours DRM though.

It has been suggested that amazon and the like are looking to bid for sports rights when they are next review (apparently tv is old hat it is all about streaming).

If this happens and the matches are streamed live, are they going to be available to stream and watch at a later time/date?

If not then there needs to be a way of recording them for later viewing - not everyone can be in and able to watch when it happens live - people do have lives!

Re: Recording VOD/streaming services.

That's up to Amazon.

Currently they allow downloading of shows to the apps on mobile devices, but they don't do so on any TV device or computer.

No reason why not. The BBC i-player allows you to watch shows live which are subsequently available on demand.

However, that, as Ben says, would be up to Amazon.

In theory yes, however sports are very much the poor relation when it comes to catch-up. It is not the norm for the whole match to be available, usually only a few minutes highlights.

Except for tennis where you can watch live and watch full matches later at any time. Great service and cheap. If I recall £99 a year or £10 for a month.

Maybe right now, but no reason why not in the future. There's nothing whatsoever to prevent it.
