Yeah a vote on giving himself even more power was bound to be fair wasn't it and I don't suppose he'll abuse them at all...

Re: Turkey's President Erdogan on Brink of Dictatorship

Even with the possibility that some of this was rigged you have to wonder why people voted to give him more power. Wasn't his role largely symbolic, i.e akin to the German President, at first?

What people will vote for if they're convinced of the threat of enemies is amazing.

I dare say a good many believe he'll use that power to look after them and crack down severely on anyone who disagrees. Others will have been intimidated into voting the way they did. It's how the likes of Robert Mugabe have stayed in power for so long.

Re: Turkey's President Erdogan on Brink of Dictatorship

Regardless of what people think of Erdogan though: A more secular aligned government would be particularly vulnerable at this time to being underminded by even more undesirable elements. Turkey is afterall on the frontline against IS/Daesh or whatever they want to be called today. Better the devil you know and that.

NATO needs Turkey for it's strategic importance in the region and Turkey (Erdogan) needs NATO to hide behind when he's puffing out his chest and swinging his junk around
