Thanks for the comments.

I'm definitely going for a single cable to the loft with a Netgear Prosafe Gigabit switch (we use them at work and they are simple & reliable with no fan) to distribute the network around the house. Shouldn't be a problem to run a fused spur from the lighting circuit in the loft for the mains powered switch.

I'm certainly looking forward to getting my new cable 30Mb connection wired to my main desktop PC instead of using the wireless connection!
