When do we get an email telling us to fill in a self assessment tax return?
For the last 2-3 years i have had to do a self assessment tax return, this was due to me going over the capital gains tax limit as i am a PAYE tax payer.
This year i haven't received an email from them telling me i need to complete, the previous years i think i get the request in April, so does this mean i dont need to fill one in this year as i logged into the account and i can't see anything asking me to? Although when i did log in i saw an over due message for £12.25 so i have payed that now so hopefully that isn't related to me not getting an email.

Just because you haven't recieved an email does not exempt you if you know you should fill one in.
Why not just do it regardless? You may even get your £12.25 back.

Re: When do we get an email telling us to fill in a self assessment tax return?
I am a lower rate tax payer so taxed at source, havent been over the capital gains limit in years so my point being maybe they have decided i dont need to do it any longer? There also isn't currently an option to fill in a self assessment for 2016-2017 so i was hoping someone knowledgeable would have an idea whether seeing it is now May i may not be getting one as I don't need it?

After a certain period they stop asking you if previous years show you didn't really need to do one.
I haven't been asked to fill one in this year, but they told me I wouldn't last year.

Why not contact them and ask?

I always try to avoid a phone call and last year i sent an online message asking to be removed but never got a reply, easier just to ask someone here for a quick answer.

You can log in to the Government Gateway and complete the online self-assessment without being asked. I did it a couple of times when I was employed and ended up with a tax refund for the year.

At this time there is no option for me to complete it, will leave it a few weeks and see if things change.

Re: When do we get an email telling us to fill in a self assessment tax return?
So after realising that i was 4 months over due in paying a £12.25 tax bill as i thought it would be taken from PAYE i eventually payed it on 1st June, i didn't get charged interest and it also says on my tax account online 'HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has not sent you a notice to complete a tax return.' so i am now happy and freeeeeeeeeee!

Re: When do we get an email telling us to fill in a self assessment tax return?
I sent a letter telling them of untaxed income and they told me to register as self-employed! (I'm retired...). I called them and what they meant was to complete a self-assessment form online. I did that, then immediately got an email telling me I didn't need to complete anymore online assessments. Go figure.

When I retired , this was before online self assessment the HMRC sent me a Self Assessment form to complete which I did.
I think it is just update their system to your retired income.
My retired income is all PAYG.
