I'm here! I've arrived!
I can hear it now: "You're where?"
I'm at the Holiday Inn Express in Sheffield, for Redemption '17 - a special one because we're commemorating the late great Gareth Thomas. The actual event's at the Royal Victoria Hotel; the HIE is handling overspill.
Two years. Two long years I've been waiting ('cause it's only held every two years!) - only to be held up by Storm Doris! Today, of all days! This journey, which should've been routine but was transformed into something other, was planned in 4 stages:
Stage 1: home to Bolton Train Station via bike - easy bit, no trouble except the gusts of wind and the odd spot of rain - meh..
Stage 2: Bolton -> Manchester Oxford Road - also no problemo.
Then the fun started with Stage 3: Oxford Road -> Sheffield. The train I got was over an hour late, and the expected time kept changing...for the worse. I was starting to believe the damn thing was going backwards.
However, it did arrive...and proceeded at reduced speed. 
They have tsunamis and earthquakes in Japan, but they manage okay, I've heard, yet we can't cope with a bit of wind. I gather you get a discount if your train is more than 30 seconds - that's seconds, not minutes - late!
Stage 4, Sheffield Train Station -> Holiday Inn Express, was planned as a walk, as it's not that far and I had a map. Thanks to Doris, however, it was raining and dark (and it's been 20 years since I was last in Sheffield, so I wasn't sure about night navigation), so sod that - I hopped in a taxi. The day I can't spare £5.20 is the day I just give up; the urge to be thrifty is a hangover from my desperate dole days - I keep forgetting I'm gainfully employed now. 
Occasionally - just every now and then - I wonder if a smartphone wouldn't be useful as a navigation aid. The thought tends to pass quickly as I hate the damn things, but still...
A shower and a bite to eat later, I'm now comfy in my very nice room, looking forward to the usual madness and hilarity that is Redemption.
Sheffield and the Royal Victoria aren't gonna know what's hit 'em!

Not specifically; Redemption started life as a B7/Babylon 5 con, but now pretty much every SF fan's welcome. There are many many Firefly fans, for example.
