Ground conditions at Newmarket could be a question mark for the hugely talented Camelot in the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained three-year-old aims to become the first son of Montjeu to win the Rowley Mile Classic, and though Montjeu's progeny generally act well with cut in the ground, Camelot showed a brilliant turn of foot on a sound surface to run away with last season's Racing Post Trophy.

Big-race rider Joseph O'Brien told At The Races: "He has a high cruising speed and ticks the right boxes. I'd be hoping he'd run a nice race. I have to have a question mark over the ground. He's a very good moving horse and won both starts last year on good ground."

Born To Sea has plenty to live up to as a half-brother to Sea The Stars, but he is pleasing his trainer John Oxx ahead of a tilt at the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday.

The handler has been happy with how his colt has gone at home in recent weeks and he does not expect the ground conditions to cause too many problems.

"The weather hasn't hindered us at all. The horse has had a good preparation and he hasn't missed any work," said Oxx.

Roger Charlton admits Top Offer will need to show "considerable" improvement if he is to win the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

The once-raced colt was an impressive winner of a Newbury maiden last season, but missed his intended trial in the Greenham Stakes due to very soft ground, and the trainer still harbours doubts about his ability to be seen at his best in those conditions.

"Top Offer has been our big hope since last August and finally we are nearly there. He is a wonderful looking colt with great presence and an easy action that may not be suited by the soft ground," said the Beckhampton handler.

Harbour Watch will soon step up his recovery from injury as his connections dream of what might have been in the Qipco 2000 Guineas.

The Richard Hannon-trained colt was unbeaten in three juvenile starts and was towards the forefront of the Guineas market before a setback ruled him out of the Rowley Mile Classic.

Hot favourite Camelot landed the Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket for the Aidan O'Brien team with a late flourish.

Joseph O'Brien held him up towards the rear of the main group and produced him with a charge through the final furlong.

Overseas raider French Fifteen made the best of his way home, but Camelot (15-8 favourite) cut him down and swept to victory by a neck.

Well the king has been crowned but only just but congratulations to AO on winning his 6th 2000 Guineas.

Roger Charlton's Al Kazeem sprung a minor surprise when claiming some prize scalps in the Qatar Bloodstock Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket.

Ridden by James Doyle, who flies to Hong Kong straight after the 2000 Guineas to partner Cityscape in the BMW Champions Mile, the four-year-old stretched away to win the Group Two contest in tremendous style.

The 15-2 chance romped clear to score by four and a half lengths from Quest For Peace, with Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden staying on for third, a length and a quarter further back.

I'll Have Another swooped late down the Churchill Downs stretch to win a thrilling renewal of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday night.

The strongly-fancied Bodemeister attempted to make virtually all in the 138th running of the 'Run for the Roses', setting the five fastest splits in Derby history, and still held a healthy lead entering the stretch.

Just as he looked like hanging on, the Doug O'Neill-trained I'll Have Another got to Bob Baffert's charge in the last 100 yards.

In winning, the Flower Alley colt became the first to win from stall 19, and was a maiden Derby victory for O'Neill - and a first on his first ride in the race for jockey Mario Guttierez. Dullahan was third

Richard Fahey's progressive Mayson won the Pearl Bloodstock Palace House Stakes at Newmarket.

An impressive winner of the Abernant Stakes on his seasonal reappearance over six furlongs at this track, the four year old was sent off a well backed favourite as a result.

His supporters never had a moment's cause for concern in this Group Three contest despite dropping back a furlong in trip.

The Invincible Spirit colt saw enough daylight racing on the outside of the 16 strong field but in the middle of the track and could always be seen moving well just in behind the pace.

He picked up well when asked and ran on strongly for pressure to record a first success at this level, readily holding the challenge of the easy to back Definightly and Elusivity by three parts of a length and a head.

Aidan O'Brien became the first trainer since 1942 to claim the 1000 and 2000 Guineas in the same season on two occasions as Homecoming Queen ran out a surprise winner of the fillies' Classic 24 hours after Camelot's triumph.

The legendary Fred Darling was the last man to achieve the feat that O'Brien first managed in 2005 with Virginia Waters and Footstepsinthesand.

That O'Brien won the Qipco 1000 Guineas was no shock, but he was expected to do it with the 13-8 favourite Maybe, ridden, like Camelot, by his son Joseph, and not 25-1 shot Homecoming Queen, the mount of Ryan Moore.

John Gosden was delighted with his Qipco 1000 Guineas fillies Starscope and The Fugue after they finished second and fourth in the Rowley Mile Classic.

Stable jockey William Buick was on board 22-1 shot The Fugue, but it was her 33-1 stable companion Starscope who performed best under Jimmy Fortune, finishing a length in front of favourite Maybe without ever threatening to get near the runaway winner Homecoming Queen.

"I was thrilled with both my fillies, who will go further in time and will want a longer trip," said the Newmarket handler.

Kailani showed she has inherited plenty of her mother's ability when waltzing away with the Tweenhills Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket.

A daughter of 1000 Guineas and Oaks heroine Kazzia, she had won on her only previous start at Yarmouth last year.

Allied Powers claimed victory for Michael Bell in the Prix d'Hedouville at Longchamp.

The seven-year-old was always in the first three in the Group Three event, but Ioritz Mendizabal was having to ask for an extra effort as the field straightened up for home.

Favourite Solemia looked full of running, but Olivier Peslier found himself caught on the inside of Allied Powers with nowhere to go and though he tried to switch on to the rail, again no gap appeared, and he had to settle for third. Allied Powers edged out Molly Malone at the line.

Multiple Group One-winning sprinter Starspangledbanner could be set for a surprise return to training due to fertility problems at stud.

The six-year-old won twice at the highest level in his native Australia and also produced his best in the northern hemisphere after joining Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle, winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes and the July Cup in 2010.

He was retired at the end of that season to join the Coolmore Stud roster and his first crop of foals hit the ground this spring.

The England international striker and his wife, Coleen, purchased three horses to be trained by Tom Dascombe, who is based at Manor House Stables in Cheshire, a yard part-owned by Rooney's Manchester United colleague Michael Owen.

Pippy, a juvenile colt by Exceed And Excel, runs in the Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes, this year sponsored by Manor House Stables.

"Pippy is fine. He's quite a nice little horse, but we're obviously throwing him in at the deep end," said Dascombe.

"We couldn't be sure Pippy would get in the maiden later in the week so we'll try him in the Lily Agnes and see what happens.

Betterbetterbetter looked like landing the spoils for trainer Aidan O'Brien when his son Joseph kicked on just over a furlong out after a tussle with Everlong on the turn for home.

The rider was found guilty of using his whip above the permitted level when finishing a narrow second aboard Betterbetterbetter, who is trained by his father Aidan, in the Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks.

O'Brien will be sidelined May 23-26 inclusive, which includes the Abu Dhabi Irish Guineas meeting. However, he can apply to the British Horseracing Authority to defer the ban as Group One racing will be taking place

The Group Three contest may have lost some of its lustre with the late absence of Bonfire, but Joseph O'Brien made it a true test over the extended mile and a quarter and gradually ran his three rivals ragged to win in tremendous style.

Uriah Heep was the first beaten with half a mile to run, but no horse got close enough to mount a challenge as the 11-10 favourite galloped all the way to the line to win by 11 lengths. Oxford Charley was second and Kingsdesire third.

Memphis Tennessee completed a quick big-race double for the Aidan and Joseph O'Brien team in the Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes at Chester.

The evens favourite pulled clear in the final furlong to win by four lengths from Vivacious Vivienne, with newcomer Calico Cat third.

Brown Panther was a major disappointment for his breeder and co-owner, Manchester United footballer Michael Owen. He was last of the four runners after making a lot of the running in the hands of Kieren Fallon, weakening rapidly after being tightened up by Vivacious Vivienne when passed.

Racing in the beige silks of Godolphin's French runners for the first time, the three year old successfully stepped up into Pattern company with a narrow success under Maxime Guyon.

The Andre Fabre-trained son of Pivotal didn't make his debut until March when returning a beaten favourite at this track, a fate he was to suffer next time out at Longchamp as well.

However, he made it third time lucky at Longchamp over 10 furlongs at the end of April and overcame traffic problems, barging past the previously unbeaten leader Xanadu who was nearly brought down, to take another rung up the ladder over this furlong shorter trip with a short neck success from Sofast.

Australian sprinter Black Caviar stretched her unbeaten run to 21 with an effortless victory in the Group One Goodwood at Morphettville.

Having her final run before flying over to England for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, Peter Moody's superstar never came off the bridle, and as there was no pace on early, Luke Nolen hit the front at his leisure before turning into the straight.

With connections keen not to ask too much of her with her biggest assignment to date looming large, Nolen kept a tight hold of her head and while the winning distance of just over a length was not as far as her fans have become accustomed to, there was never a worry.

Nolen said: "We were never out of second gear."

Main Sequence was ticketed for the Investec Derby after justifying a jump up in class when extending his unbeaten run to four with a cosy success in the Betfred Derby Trial at Lingfield.

The David Lanigan-trained colt (3-1) was coming off success in a handicap at the Newmarket Craven meeting, but despite flashing his tail proved too determined for the 5-4 favourite Shantaram, wining with something in hand by three-quarters of a length under Ted Durcan.

There was a big gap to the third Cavaleiro and connections are in principle keen to go on to Epsom with their son of Aldebaran, who was trimmed to 16-1 from 25s for the Investec Derby by Ladbrokes.

Brian Ellison has had his horses in cracking form through the spring and the Malton trainer landed another big prize as Global Village claimed the Betfred Victoria Cup at Ascot.

Not surprisingly, the 24-runner field split into two groups through the early stages, and the far side was to prove the place to be in the richly endowed seven-furlong contest.

Dropped out early on, the Tadhg O'Shea-ridden Global Village (9-1) could be spotted making definite progress a furlong and a half from home and he saw his race out well to beat Bonnie Brae by three-quarters of a length. Light Heavy continued his progressive profile for Jim Bolger with an ultra-game performance in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown.

Tower Rock, the apparent pacemaker for better-fancied Aidan O'Brien-trained stablemate and Breeders' Cup winner Wrote, set off in front, with Kevin Manning sitting in second on the eventual winner.

Light Heavy joined issue at the two-furlong pole with Wrote, the 8-13 favourite, struggling, and settled down for a titanic tussle as Tower Rock refused to give in. Although not the biggest, Light Heavy (15-8) certainly has the right attitude and the son of Teofilo answered every call before prevailing by a neck.
