What Wireless Router are you using and would you recommend it?

Version 4s pose a small difficulty when upgrading the firmware, while version 5s cannot be modified; v5 is the latest. You'll see people asking the version question on eBay when buying a WRT54G, as most people who want these excellent WiFI routers want to modify the firmware to improve the functionality of the units.

I agree they're excellent units (I have had one for a couple of weeks now) but I do question whether 'most' people want to modify the firmware. I think frequenting forums can lead to a distorted perspective on what 'most' people like to do with their PCs and other hardware.

I know enough about routers to know people like to hack a Linksys, but I wanted a Linksys because I heard it is a good router in its own right, not because I wanted to hack it.

I think I will be getting a Linksys WRT54G after all.

I've noticed it's quite cheap on ebay with both the WRT54G and WRT54GS models at the same price.

Also, I just found this from linksysinfo.org

-for All round performance and total recommendations: WRT54G v2.0-v4.0 / WRT54GS v1.0-v4.0
-note: Stay away from WRT54G v1.x (125Mhz CPU) and WRT54G v5.0 / WRT54GS v5.0 VxWorks + limited ram. The is now however a DD-WRT micro version 3rd party firmware for the v5.0's but you need to add a serial port to the motherboard and use JTAG to flash the WRT to gain linux compatable OS. for more information checkout the wiki at http://www.dd-wrt.com

Do you think this is relevant to me? I'm not planning to change the firmware or anything unless it helps to increase the Speed of transfer or something.

Just got a WRT54G, pretty hacked off at Maplins, but its up and running now, seems ok to me... Not had the chance to mess with it much yet. got MAC filtering on...

The hardware in versions 2 to 4 is the best (200MHz processor, 16MB RAM):
