Transfering Files Between PCs Via Network Cable

I want to transfer files between two of my PCs. One has Windows XP and the other has Windows 98. I have bought the necessary crossover cable and have connected the two PCs but neither will acknowledge the existence of the other.

I am a novice in this area.What am I doing wrong and what do I have to do establish a two way connection between them please?

I have looked for articles on the net but they tend to discuss connections using hubs/routers etc. They also tend not to give enough information for a novice like me to carry out the task.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

You could do the easy option send via MSN file trans, but there's a way of cross trans from PC to PC

Just a guess here: are you running firewalls? If so, you could try disabling them (You may want to disable web access before doing that)

Windows XP uses SMB on port 445 for file sharing, while Windows 9x uses an older system on port 139.

In Network connections, double click your network connection, choose properties, scroll down the list to TCP/IP and highlight it, choose properties and click on advanced, in the WINS tab, make sure 'Netbios over TCP/IP' is enabled.

You must use an admin account.
