Where's all my spam gone?
I'd been getting 20-30 spam and phishing emails to my main Hotmail/Outlook account for ages. The usual garbage ranging from Russian brides and FaceBook message warnings to Peruvian impotence aids and offers to join the Labour Party at a discount rate Mostly the messages were spoofed to appear to come from my own account and nearly all of them were clearly linked to a couple of website addresses.
Anyway a few days ago they suddenly stopped. I'm still getting a couple of random ones a day but the plethora of spam and phishing messages linked to these 2 websites have just gone and I'm wondering why. Has MS suddenly done something about what I know has been a problem for years? I haven't seen anything online about this so just wondering if anyone here can explain this change for the better.
TIA as always.

I've had a similar experience with an old (very old) BTinternet account that used to get loads of spam, all of a sudden a month or two ago it went down by about 90%. I'm not entirely sure why the account still works as I haven't used BT internet since dial up days. Perhaps there's a new spam algorithm all the webmail services get to share ???.

oh, I would wish that the same happens to me. It looks like that you have a spam filter. I am just curious how to switch on this spam filter...

I haven't switched anything on or changed anything. I was getting loads of spam (mostly spoofed to look like they came from my own account) and now I'm not, just 1 or 2 a day for the last week from random email addresses. Most of it was going into my junk folder as opposed to the Inbox. If you hover your mouse pointer over the message titles in your junk folder it will display what looks like the sender's address. In fact it all to often isn't that and it can be made to read your own email address. I believe this was done to fool spam filters and of the spam I was getting, about 80% was made to look like it came from my own account. ALL of this has stopped which leads me to think MS have done something about that problem in particular rather than spam itself.
If you are getting spam in your Inbox you can set 'rules' which allow you to pick common words used in the titles of spam message and divert any mail which contains those words to your junk folder or delete folder. If you look on YouTube for Hotmail inbox rules or something similar you'll find some examples of how to set them. This only works for spam which is actually getting into your Inbox and obviously you need to select words which aren't going to occur in your ordinary mail headings. These might include stuff related to gambling, casinos, dating, PPI claims and a plethora of 'adult' words for example.

Oh I am. Very.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had the same happen. I can't find any mention of this on the internet which I'd have thought wouldn't be the case if MS had suddenly resolved such an annoying issue for their users.

Re: Where's all my spam gone?
Back in dial-up days I returned from a 2 week holiday to over 3,500 emails.
It took two hours to download, and at least another 3 to sort and delete.

Most I've had is about 30 in a day which amounts to about 400 over that period. That's just spam though.

I cannot answer that, as I don't use MS mail services.

I have some gmail accounts and I don't get anything like the amount of spam on those but then again I don't use them as much so that's probably why.

Re: Where's all my spam gone?
I think a lot of email providers have got together and sorted out black lists.
I get the odd dodgy one get through but I just delete them.

We've not had any for quite a long time (years?) on the VM mail accounts so I think you're probably correct. I've not looked at the spam box up on the web mail. Just content that nothing gets in the inbox locally

Re: Where's all my spam gone?
Thank you for your replies! Well, I think I will find the way to get rid of the spam... at least I hope.
May I ask which kind of spam did you get? Was it some strange websites, banks, some personal emails etc?

A few are phishing e-mails purporting to come from your bank and asking you to update your details via a link or your account will be frozen. Pretty obvius because I didn't even have an account at that bank as well as the URLs looking wrong. I would NEVER click on a link of that kind but log into your bank in the normal way.
Plus the usual inducements for blue pills and getting parts of my anatomy enlarged.
