Cheapest monthly VPN?
I might be using a VPN for work but as it would likely be for occasional/irregular use I'm after a cheap pay-monthly option rather than annual, any suggestions? I don't really trust any of the free services.

Prices per month are underneath in dollars, a lot of them make you pay that way too.

Re: Cheapest monthly VPN?
I'm confused - is this to connect to your works network ?
If so then surely their IT department will tell you what VPN client you need (and provide it) as they will have the server at their end.

Get a cheap Linux VPS - ie: https://www.ovh.co.uk/vps/vps-ssd.xml
And install OpenVPN or OpenVPN-NL
Plenty of tutorials on the net.

Re: Cheapest monthly VPN?
I'd forgotten about this thread
I'm not really looking for the 'best' service, more like the cheapest. This is more for when I connect to wifi etc on the move. It's not specifically part of my job description which is why they won't make an official recommendation.

Re: Cheapest monthly VPN?
If you only want to keep your data secure at wifi hot spots and from ISP's bulk logging then a cheap vps is good enough. Just requires you to be able to follow instructions on how to install and set it up.
Never use a free VPN provider if you can help it. Normally their money is made from selling your browsing history from their logs. They also get compromised and the logs stolen a lot more than you think and its surprising how much useful data is there for hackers.
Paid vpn providers have the benefit of multiple IP addresses/locations and a simple to use interface. The decent ones also have different ways of encrypting your connection as well as methods that bypass firewalls when you are inside a network which might block vpn traffic. If you don't require any of those features, get the cheap vps.
As much as I hate to recommend them for privacy reasons (US based, National security letters/gag orders, no warrant canary, nagging feeling it's run by a government agency etc etc), if you only care about the basics of hiding your traffic then PIA/privateinternetaccess.com is probably the cheapest vpn provider for single months and easiest to use. For someone truly in to privacy I would recommend more costly alternatives though.

The fact they have to log to sell the data means they can also be compelled law or the courts to turn over their logs to whichever lawyers want them.
All stuff to keep in mind.
As an example of one vpn providers logs, Safetun for Apple phones, which got pwned and it's logs stolen, they log this kind of information for http requests (I redacted the emails and truncated some lines but this is just form the last 100 or so lines of the log so you get an idea):
Oh and if you ever used HideMyAss as a VPN in the past, all your login details and passwords have been passed around so much I would hope you have all changed passwords since.
