on a contract if you lose your phone do you still have to pay the remainder of the contract

Yes. Though if you have insurance the phone will be replaced. If you don't have insurance they will probably just send you a new SIM to use on a different phone

The last time my sim didn't work properly I phoned them up and they sent me a new one out.
