Cautionary speed related tale
Just thought I'd pass on this cautionary tale.
I moved house about 4 months ago and re-joined VM. When the service was (eventually) connected - I was getting a quite respectable 17-18 meg.
Then about 2 months ago I noticed things had really started slowing up. I used the usual speed test sites - and was pretty much getting about 6-7 meg - sometimes less at peak times.
Nothing changed after a few weeks - and so in a fit of peek - I decided to phone and have a moan about the stupidly over-subscribed VM network.
.....but before doing so, I just thought I'd check ethernet speeds - rather than using the wifi network - and *bam* - 19-20 meg!!
...after much fiddling with wi-fi I established that the cause of the problem was my own network. I'd downgraded to an incorrect version of the software for my router to solve an xbox 360 problem some weeks earlier. Reverting to the latest version of the software for my router solved the problem and now I'm getting 18-20 meg wirelessly depending on the time of day.
I'm staggered that software versions can make such a difference to download speeds on routers and just wanted to pass this on!!
