Cable modem - Xbox 360 - Gigabit switch

Just picked up a Netgear gs605 switch to use both my pc and 360 through the modems connection.

However I can't seem to get both things working online at the same time, as far as i'm aware i've got it wired correctly and i've had both things using the connection on their own through the switch but with both plugged in one or the other won't connect.

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

You need a router as well.

The router deals with coordinating communication between the modem and the clients.

Could I not just have used a wired router on it's own without the switch then?

yeah, most routers have a switch built in (as opposed to just a normal hub) - so you could send your switch back and get a router...

Thought so, don't you just love being given bent advice?

Not sure I can return the bugger either.

This would be fine for instance? Or should I be looking at something better?

Something like that should be fine - you have a cable connection right, not adsl?
There are probably better models you can get, but it's been a while since I've bought a router, so don't know what is best - if you wait a little bit someone will come in and recommend a better model

Re: Cable modem - Xbox 360 - Gigabit switch

Make certain that whatever you buy is rated to 100Mb on the WAN side. Some older routers are 10/100 LAN but only 10Mb WAN and they won't handle 20Mb cable. You'll get major freezes and dropouts, particularly when gaming.

Re: Cable modem - Xbox 360 - Gigabit switch

You might not be thinking of upgrading, but there are 4MB upgrades to 10MB trials happening so the upgrade itself won't be too far behind (hopefully).

..and even routers rated as 10Mb WAN don't always cope with the full 10Mb reliably.
