WAP54G & NTL Cable Modem

Seem to be having a nightmare setting up a WAP54G and an NTL Cable modem.

Modem connected to laptop and internet works fine.

Where there is an issue is not knowing what settings to use on the WAP54G when this is connected to the Cable Modem.

WiFi is fine between WAP54G and Laptop, can get in and configure the interfacte no problem.

I have the address that is supplied to the modem when its connected, what settings do I use in the WAP54G

Thanks

G

Re: WAP54G & NTL Cable Modem

If this is a Linksys WAP54G, it's an access point & not a router.

See here for an explanation...

You need a router, not an access point.

Re: WAP54G & NTL Cable Modem

Yep its definately an Access Point, and my understanding is that its FINE for a SINGLE connection, there are many others using access points as opposed to ROUTERS, I was just after the settings for the Wap54G on the Cable Network.

Thanks for the quick response.

Re: WAP54G & NTL Cable Modem

Sorry, my misunderstanding...

If you want it as a single connection I think you need to have it set up as a fixed IP (192.168.1.245 is the default I think), subnet mask 255.255.255.0 with the gateway IP as reported by ipconfig when connected directly to the SACM...

Re: WAP54G & NTL Cable Modem

Sorry, forgot, have you got the DNS IPs in your TCP/IP settings?

Re: WAP54G & NTL Cable Modem

Hmm. The problem is that access points are designed to operate on one network. Routers, essentially, operate on two.

When you connect your cable modem to a router, you're connecting it to the WAN (wide-area network) segment of the router. The router then also has a LAN (local-area network) segment for your PCs are routes the traffic between the two.

Access points do no such thing and, sadly, the multiple user argument is irrelevant. If you plugged your cable modem directly into the PC then that would be fine. However, the when you plug the access point directly to the cable modem, it acts like a single PC would, and unless there is some routing going on (or what's know as NAT or internet connection sharing) then nothing else can use the connection. NTL allows you *one* IP address for connection of *one* device. By using a router you can allow other devices to share this IP, in effect. But since access points are more like hubs than routers, they cannot share the internet in this fashion

I hope that makes some sort of sense, and I'm sure there's someone out there that can explain it slightly better than me :o)

Basically... you'll need a router I'm afraid. To save money you could buy a cheapy 'wired' router and plug the access point into that, rather than buying an all-out wireless router.

Best of luck
