This could perhaps have been avoided if Windows had a native HDD S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) monitoring app. Unfortunately it doesn't.

You could disable the company logo on post, enable S.M.A.R.T. in the BIOS and get an OK or failure warning giving you time to back up or clone the drive.

There's this free app which can be set up to monitor continuously or just warn you at the end of boot.
