at the command prompt, immediately after typing the ping command, type arp -a. e.g, my machine is 192.168.1.100, if I ping 192.168.1.5 which exists on my network, I get the following -
E:\>arp -a
Interface: 192.168.1.100 --- 0x6
Internet Address Physical Address Type
192.168.1.5 00-a0-24-cb-d4-84 dynamic
If I ping 192.168.1.6 which doesn't, I get this -
E:\>arp -a
Interface: 192.168.1.100 --- 0x6
Internet Address Physical Address Type
192.168.1.6 00-00-00-00-00-00 invalid
Note the Physical address is all 0's and type is invalid
If you get the former and the ping isn't working, the most likely cause is you have a firewall on the machine

Both XP firewalls are OFF.
Not sure what you mean by the arp -a. I type in
ping 192.168.1.105arp -a and get told it's a bad parameter????
