Exactly. If you think about it, if Columbus had believed that the earth was flat, sailing straight for the edge without any idea of how far away it was and without sufficient supplies to get back would have been a suicidal way to behave. He clearly hoped to make landfall somewhere he could replenish the hold before sailing back again. He just happened to believe that would be Japan, not an unknown landmass in the West.
