Series programs are not always transmitted at the same time as the first episode. So detection by code is the only way to locate them. If code is used for such future programs, it can be used for the first program and time disposed of. There are no cut-offs with code recording.
Sadly the TiVo software doesn't work in this way. It relies on the guide data plus any pre-programmed extensions as Raider999 said. Series episodes being broadcast at different times isn't a problem though, as long as the times for each episode are correct in the guide data.
