They are pay over the odds because they are English players which command an absurd premium.

Downing got more goals and assists than Modric last year and those fees have
a lot of add ons included, I think they are doing the right thing buying British based, they are proven and that's why theres a premium, Liverpool can't afford to give anyone a season to bed in like they did with Alonso they need to hit the ground running and I for one think they will.

I don't remember anyone saying Bergkamp was average and when Henry, Viera and Petit signed people said who rather than they're average.
