I suppose the next question is, given that we'll finish second in the medals table, do we quit whilst we're ahead?

Is the lottery funding for elite athletes justified or could/should the money be spent elsewhere?

There's clearly a feel good factor in our medal haul but is it enough to justify the outlay? The 'basking in reflected glory' will diminish quickly when the Games close today and we'll come back down to earth with a bump.

Savers continue to be fleeced; pensions plundered and home ownership a pipe dream for many young people.

No gold medals for the unfunded riff-raff and those won at Rio cost several hundred mi££ions.

I enjoyed the Games and we did well. Is it time to say, we know what we can achieve in sport, we're now changing our priorities?
