The Downing deal was done in the press and through agents. Nothing behind closed doors about it. One minute he wants to sign a new contract with Villa and is thanking them for their faith in signing him with a major injury and sticking with him when he wasn't playing well and saying how he owed them a lot, and then he has a meeting with his agent, refuses to discuss a new contract, talks about leaving in the press, and hands in a transfer request.
You've got a strange idea of what behind closed doors means.
