Getting free channels via old Virgin media cable?

Apologies if I'm being really dense, but can anyone help me? I've just moved and my house has (what I think) is a cable line downstairs. It fits into the back of an old sky box my friend had, but not into the back of my TV. I don't want to pay for cable, just get basic channels. Is there any way of doing this via a decoder box or something? Thanks!

If you don't pay, you don't get anything on Virgin. It's not a free service. Decoders can only legally be obtained from Virgin. If you have an old sky box, simply have a dish put up and you can get free channels that way if you like. You will need a current freesatfromsky viewing card to get all the free-to-view channels. Last I heard these cost a one-off fee of £20.
