Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
Next weeks 'Gadget Show' on Channel 5 HD is to review the V6.
This might help those who are thinking of getting one to come to a decision. It's on at 7pm on 17 March 2017, with repeats the following day on Spike (10:05) and My5 at (12:00). On Sunday the 19th, the final showing is on Channel 5 HD (12:00). |

1) one of my V6 boxes often has green screen when I switch over to it or switch to on. 2) watching box B recordings on box A simply doesn't work 3) 1Tb boxes are too small for me recording a lot of HD live sport - why no box with a bigger drive? As I said, apart from these probs I am really impressed. |
Re: V6 independent review to take place.
1) one of my V6 boxes often has green screen when I switch over to it or switch to on. sounds to me like a faulty box - give VM a ring
2) watching box B recordings on box A simply doesn't work again, if you have a faulty box this won't work. My two V6s talk fine to each other and I frequently watch recordings from the other box with no difficulty 3) 1Tb boxes are too small for me recording a lot of HD live sport - why no box with a bigger drive? Once you have two V6s connected you have 2TB of capacity...and twelve tuners! |
Re: V6 independent review to take place.
The green screen is compatibility problem with some TVs. There's a software update coming in the next few weeks that hopefully will fix it.
Problems with multi-room streaming are usually due to connection problems between one or both of the boxes and the SuperHub. But I'd start by rebooting both boxes. In what way doesn't it work? |
Re: Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
I personally wouldn't trust the Gadget show reviews they are quite biased towards Apple and SKY i feel, however with the new team this might change.

Jason Bradbury was a person to point at and laugh for being so 100% apple he became an irrelevance. He even looks like Jonny Ive made him, probably out of Aluminium.

Don't say that, lol. I always get told I look like Jason!
He was the only thing that kept me watching as he was so enthusiatic about tech. I still wise Suzy Perry would comeback :-) |

Your green screen suggestion is a possible (connected to a Sony HD tv) - had green screens on and off since day1 As for connection problem - re-booted both a number of times, did actually get this working once but never since. I had an engineer out after a couple of days (also had no phone line) - despite having reported the to problems he said he was only there to do the phone, had no knowledge of my to problems, wasn't even prepared to look at them - said he had already exceeded the 20 mins allowed to resolve my problem(s). |

Economies of scale will make it cheaper to have only one box and VM will make more money by getting two upfront charges and double ongoing monthly fees. |

I have a Sony 4K TV but have not seen any green screen issues, but maybe the later Sonys don't have this problem. It seems to me that technology is moving ahead so fast that when you change once piece of equipment, sometimes this causes a compatibility problem for your older equipment. |

They still haven't reviewed Sky Q on the Gadget Show yet but now about a year later they're reviewing the V6...hmm. Just really hating the new "old Top Gear style" of the show. It ruined car reviews and it's now ruining gadget reviews with this "old-hat style" of reviews. |

I don't like Craig Charles it feels like he is forcing it for me the camera panned to Ortis when Craig was talking and Ortis had a "wth" expression on his face, the new gal is ok i thought plus nice on the eye lol. I don't like the new format either but will give it a chance to get used to it at least they seem to have got rid of those stupid challenges, however they've copied someone on youtube with the blender lol. At least they are trying to make it work though. Personally i find Swipe and Click better shows. |

Re: Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
Just watched the review and the overall opinion was "slightly disappointing for £55 a month".
Here is a roundup: Good- improved speed. VM claim that it's 10 x faster than the old TiVo and this was accepted. Has Netflix (but not Amazon). Packages slightly cheaper than comparable Sky packages. Could be useful- ability to record 6 channels at once for families watching diverse material. Being able to press a button on the box to locate the remote control. Bad- Less channels, 4K content & VOD than Sky eg Broadchurch wasn't available on VM. The Telly Tablet was particularly slated. It had a large screen and a useful stand, but a really low & tinny sound which was described as "terrible". The actual mechanics of watching programmes wasn't good. The interface was said to be less slick than Sky Q, many shows weren't available, you can only play back off one of the two TiVos. The actual streaming didn't work very well eg kept stopping. |
Re: Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
Content issues for the most part aren't connected to whether it's a Sky Q or a V6. If Sky has an exclusive deal with ITV, then there's nothing VM can do about it.

Re: Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
Watching the programme it would seem Jon Bentley has been using Sky Q in main room and has a hybrid LNB as he seems to have a freesat (white Sky+) in his second room.
His views seem slightly Sky-skewed as that would seem to be the box he has been using for the last few months. It seems he has had Virgin 50Mb or 100Mb BB with a Sky Q TV package for last few months and from sounds of it he won't be switching. Does it really take 2 installers to setup a V6 box? 6 recordings (coming soon) on Sky Q 2Tb while still watching live tv on 3 TV's and up to 4 tablets why would you choose any other service? |

And for the avoidance of doubt, I cannot ever see myself recording 12 channels at the same time, particularly having regard to a declining number of programmes worth recording these days. |

As an ex sky subscriber (17 years) who has recently switched to v6:- There are far more errors reported on SkyQ. Well used features from skyHD were omitted from SkyQ software (much to chagrin of many users) Errors are minor on V6 when compared to those on SkyQ. Virgin seem a bit more open with regard to admitting errors exist than sky (who often deny any such problem is known to them, do not pre-advise what problems are to be fixed in upcoming releases - or when release is happening) Without doubt both systems are an Improvement when they work. |
Re: Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
I'm now on the latest Sky Q Software and on the whole it's been pretty flawless in operation and offers us far more than Sky+HD ever did.

Re: Ch5's Gadget Show to Review the TiVo V6 next week(17th March)
I hadn't watched the Gadget Show for a long time as the presenters and those pointless and tedious 'challenges' used to annoy me but I did record this edition especially to see their review of the V6. I have had a pair of V6s for more than six weeks and I am pleased with them but if I had watched this show and their lukewarm review I might have postponed updating my slow and buggy TiVo boxes. The potential of daisy-chaining boxes together was not mentioned at all but IMO John Bentley hit the nail on the head when he bemoaned the lack of 4K content and especially when he said that what many people want - me included - is the widest variety of programming (he mentioned Netflix, Amazon and Now TV) all available via the same box. I can only hope that Virgin Media were listening and took notes.

The operative words are 'can be' - totally dependent on the channel provider. Manual recording ensures you do not miss the end when a match goes into extra time. Use it all the time - one reason I wouldn't get SkyQ. |

I accept everyone is different however , I'm not sure why manual recording was ommited from Sky Q. Maybe it wasn't used a lot I honestly don't know. |

A lot of the time I would like an extra 10 minutes in case of a slight overrun - always had sky+HD set to 10 mins before and after - even added this padding on both recordings when consecutive on same channel. The padding of 5 minutes split between pre and post recording could also be less restrictive. |

Indeed you can, I didn't realise that thanks. Strange you can't set it for standard 10 mins before and after for all recordings but can change it after setting recording. Still good to know it is possible in a fashion. |

Mine gives me the options of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 30 minutes, 1, 1.5 and 3 hours in modify recordings.

Yes, but my point was why not allow it as a std setting. Having to modify each recording is too tedious. |

Yours appears to have less choices for extending recordings.
