'local only' via WGR614 wireless (Virgin Cable)

Can anyone help?

I've got Virgin cable with a hard wired modem currently attached to my main home PC. Internet access is fine via this.

I was sent a free Virgin Media wireless router - WGR614 and have been trying to connect this up so I can use my laptop (Vista o/s) to access the internet.

I've connected the yellow cable from the Internet port on the wireless router to the cable router and there are two constant green lights on the wireless router - power and wireless.

Th laptop can see the wireless router and connect to it successfully but only gives 'local only' access - no internet access. When I ask Windows to diagnose the issue it says that there is a DNS problem.

Where am I going wrong? / any ideas how to resolve?...

Did you reboot the modem when you swapped from the PC to the router?

not sure what you mean by 'when you swapped from the pc to the router'?

When you took the wire out of the PC and put it into the router did you turn the modem on and off?

I've not taken anything out of the pc or cable router - the pc is connected as normal to the fixed/wired cable router which, in turn, I've connected to the wireless router by plugging the yellow cable supplied with the wireless router from the cable router to the 'internet' port' on the wireless router.

Ideally the Virgin router should be connected directly to the modem, not another router

by 'directly to the modem' whould that mean the white box on the wall? - the current wired router is hard wired with no rj45 style port to plug the yellow cable into?

What does the cable from the white box on the wall go into?

Moved to 'Networking' as this is more than likely a configuration problem, as opposed to a problem specifically with your service.

it goes directly into a black modem which is attached to my home PC.

And that's what you should connect the router to - the black modem

Re: 'local only' via WGR614 wireless (Virgin Cable)

yes, that's what I have done. I've connected the netgear wireless router to the black modem using the yellow cable and, of course, plugged in the power cable for the netgear too. The netgear shows two green solid lights - power and wireless and my laptop can 'see' the netgear router but it only gives local access not internet access. Meantwhile, I can still get internet access fine on my PC via the black modem. ???

As I asked originally - did you turn off the power to the black modem when you connected the router?

This is getting confusing. What is the 'cable router' referred to in post #5?

The Internet port on the wireless router should be plugged into the black modem (instead of the PC). The PC should then be plugged into one of the LAN ports on the wireless router. The laptop will connect wirelessly to the router.

After this is all connected up, power the modem off/on. Wait for lights to settle. Power router off/on, wait for lights to settle, reboot PC and laptop.

Sorry if I'm confusing anyone. By 'Cable router' I mean a black router which is hard wired to my white cable box on the wall and connected to my home PC.
I have the Internet port on the wireless (netgear) router plugged into the black modem.
I don't have the PC plugged into the wireless router at all - I think what you are saying is that I should have?
