The musician, whose hits include 1988's Fairytale of New York and A Pair of Brown Eyes, had been unwell for some time.

MacGowan also had well-documented problems with drugs and alcohol.
A brilliant singer who will be sadly missed.:(

Yes a great musician and character, very sad. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he has to be honest as every time I saw him he was off his face. Even visited his alleged local in Dublin once, that was an interesting establishment for sure.

A life well lived Shane, made more remarkable by how much of it you could remember, reunited with Kirsty :(

Sad to hear. Saw the Pogues at the Brixton Academy a few years ago in December, fun times. His and Kirsty's Christmas legacy will live on.

Lived life to the full (and beyond).

Saw the Pogues at Leeds Uni Refectory in October ‘84, when they were supporting Elvis Costello and the Attractions.

Oh bugger. There was already a poignancy to that song because of Kirsty and, well, it's just one of those songs that gets you at Christmas time.

RIP Shane; will toast your memory with a whiskey or two this Christmas.

And their famous Christmas song Fairytale of New York is 1/5 on to be the Crimbo no 1.

Snap. Saw a lot of good bands there and that gig was right up there. He was also at the Heineken festival one year with Kirsty McColl, lucky she was there as he was somewhat incapacitated that day.
