Npower has announced one of the largest single price rises ever implemented by a "Big Six" supplier.

The company will raise standard tariff electricity prices by 15% from 16 March, and gas prices by 4.8%.

A typical dual fuel annual energy bill will rise by an average of 9.8%, or £109.

Glad I'm not an npower customer and am on a fixed payment plan for the next two years anyone that is an npower customer should look to switch soon as possible.

One suspects the other big energy companies will follow suit soon enough..

In March, they have said.

Npower hadn't raised prices since October 2013.

This is why I go on Fixed Tariffs, and review every year - unfortunately, 50-60% of the Big Six customers don't...

It's the smaller providers that give the best value and in my experience the best customer service. Unfortunately people seem to stress more about changing energy provider (which is easy), than they do moving house!
My son just moved into a house where he had to take over an NPower 'deemed' contract, first thing I did was switch him. Must tell him sometime ...

Agreed - however....

More small energy providers are at risk of collapse this winter, consumers have been warned, after GB Energy Supply said its business had become untenable because of rising energy prices...

...Katie Watts of MoneySavingExpert, the price comparison website, said: “The government push to have more and more smaller suppliers has upped the risk of companies not being able to cope.

“We’ve already seen some small suppliers having substantial customer service issues after taking on more customers . . . [and] it was always possible we would see solvency problems at some point. The recent huge rise in wholesale prices and the pound’s weakness have likely exacerbated that.”

Then jump ship and fix your deal now. The best of the Big 6 is e.on. The best of the smaller companies is Iresa, which you may not find on the usual comparison sites.

Yes that happened to me, I was with GB Energy ! however the coop took over on exactly the same very cheap tariff. There's no risk to the consumer if one of these small companies goes under, your supply continues, Ofgem have to find you a different supplier.

I shop around, and I'm still baffled when a different postcode gives very variable prices. Different part of the country, different costs.

For me isnt easy, I have been letting them bill me on estimated readings which will take me about £500 to catch up on the real reading, which I would obviously have to clear up when changing providers or package.

However this is going to be cleared up soon, as I did a power test on boxing day where everything was turned off except 2 sub 10 watt devices and my meter registered 7 units used, thats a massive gap between the two measurements. In middle of february someone is coming to test the meter, obviously when that happens the current reading will be sent back to my supplier and if the meter is deemed accurate I will have to pay up. However if its deemed accurate after I pay up I am then going to get someone to look into the wiring.

My provider is atlantic.

My current (N-Power) fixed deal ends in March, looks like I'll be leaving them.

My deal ends then, told them a couple of weeks ago I was leaving but since then the block of flats blew up, I'm kinda homeless and what little electric the block is using for external lighting is being routed through my flat and the housing association is covering my bill as well which could go on the best part of a year, so moving suppliers isn't an option, poxy npower then decide to send me a text saying we hear you've moved, we've got your final bill, morons

I shifted over to OVO from npower and Bgas ,i stayed on PAYG with a smart meter and it's working out ok although there is work to do with the smart meters ,they can be a bit iffy in poor mobile signal areas ,but OVO's customer services is excellent and got it sorted
