How the internet saved the landline.
Thought others may be interested in this programme which tells the story of the evolvement of landline telephone services in the UK:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...f-the-landline What I found interesting was that, after years of engineers building up the network, it was set to be overtaken by mobile phones. Then, the lines were needed for dial up, broadband etc, which meant that all that work and infrastructure didn't go to waste! How different the internet and it's roll out would have been without the humble landline. |

Interesting, I might give that a viewing.

I could understand if this was one guys crazy plan and the government just didn't see it as being valuable, but the fact that other countries who we'd partnered with were going ahead with it and astounded that we dropped out... come on! Underinvestment continues today. New build houses are mostly finally having FTTP installed, but existing properties will likely be stuck with FTTC for a long time now, unless you're lucky enough to have Virgin or one of the small independent networks in your area. |
