SHUB3 install - poor speed

Hello,

I'm told this is normal but thought I'd check here as well.

I set up my SHUB3 today going through the setup as instructed, I have connected the box to the PC via Ethernet and disabled the wireless connection via the control panel.

I've rebooted (everything). I've powered down and restarted (everything).

I should be getting a d/l speed of 100 mega bits (or as near to as VM can get it) but I'm struggling to get 4 or 5. A call to them said there is trouble in the area (utilisation?) and it will be until mid April before all the lines are upgraded.

I was also told it would take 24 hours for the SHUB to settle down.

Is this right?

The reason I ask is that, last night, on my old (really old) modem, I was cruising along at 20 mbits with no issue.

Would I be better off wireless? Or going into "modem mode" - not that I have any idea how to do that.

Thanks for reading and look forward to replies.

Re: SHUB3 install - poor speed

Hub 3 or any hub for that matter, do not take time to settle down.
Post your power levels for Downstream and Upstream.
If you really have utilisation issues in the area, nothing will help except when VM finish the upgrades to the infrastructure.

Edit - just tried a different Ethernet port on the SHUB but no improvement. If I was OK yesterday but not today, would would utilisation suddenly affect me? Coincidence perhaps?

Solved.

Bad SNR due to slightly loose coax wall socket. So much for the "utilisation" reasoning from VM. I must admit, I feel a bit fobbed off.

Glad you got it sorted.
You may want to setup a TBB monitor. It's a great way to keep an eye on your incoming signal www.thinkbroadband.com/ping
Very useful to have just in case you do get any problems with VM.

Re: SHUB3 install - poor speed

Spoke too soon. Back down to 10meg d/l despite good SNR. When I power up the shub can't get a net connection and runs that online diagnostic from an IP address - which doesn't cure anything. If I then leave it for about a minute or so, I get connected albeit at a very reduced level to what I should have - 10 instead of 100meg d/l.

Intrestingly, my ping is good and u/l is a consistent 5meg

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hmm... I've observed a somewhat curious behaviour.

I switch off all my kit when not in use. Completely power down.

If I then start it up, I see the stuff above - no connection, after a while connects with pants speed etc. However, once connected, if I then reboot just the PC, I get a great 100mbits back on d/l.

Does this then imply that the SHUB should be left on "standby" at all times?

I haven't yet tried modem mode - would this help?

Re: SHUB3 install - poor speed

Yes, keep it on unless you have a need to turn it off. The electricity costs of leaving it on overnight are negligible

Ahhhh! Yes, that works, Insta-100meg ahoy. Thank you!
