ADSL 2+ for gaming
 

Can anyone show me a Broadband Quality Monitor for a ADSL 2+ connection? At this moment I have virgin broadband with the SHUB 3 which is not good for gaming.
My only other option is ADSL 2+, I live about 3km for my exchange but have no idea what this would be like for gaming? I would only have my PC connected for gaming which I believe does not use much bandwidth but wish to improve my latency.
What is gaming like on ADSL? What latency would I expect?
I have spent over £3000 pound on my PC and can not get virgin to give me a SHUB 2 back, very disappointed.

ADSL should be more than fine if you can get a few megabits down and 512k up for gaming. Latency should be sub 100ms to European servers without a problem. People have gamed for years playing first person shooters on ADSL without trouble.

At 3km you should be looking at getting about 8Mbps or so, higher if your line is good. BT's checker should tell you the estimated speed.

At this moment I get 40-60 ms to the server in Germany in which I play but with the puma 6 problems do you think I would see an improvement with ADSL?

Unlikely I would say, 40-60ms is hardly an issue for gaming, even for time sensitive gaming like an FPS. A different super hub wouldn't likely make a difference, there may be utilisation issues in your area affecting your speed, there is still substantial upgrades happening at the Gateshead headend (and the 3 regional hub sites as well)

Yes but with the latency issue from the hub three I see spikes into 140 ms continuesly throughout the day.

I play with someone in California and I've never had any issues to do with latency in any of the games we play, FPS included.

Exciting news!

I game perfectly fine on my SH3, through the Gateshead headend, pings are usually in the low 20's on EUropean servers.

I have never witnessed pings that low to Europe, lucky to get that in mainland UK? Are you a VM spin doctor!

Even on the best Internet playing in a west coast server would give you a 160 ms ping from the UK. Given a average human reaction time is around 250 ms you would get owned by people on the west coast and America with low pings.

Yes you should have an improvement with latency. Unless you have a really BAD line fault on your BT connection. Whether that translates into gameplay is a completely different question.

Don't even bother asking for a BQM, as they'll all be different. Just get it and see.

Technology wise cable is worse for gaming than DSL due to it's inherent jitter. It's not really enough to ruin the experience, but its there.

Due to peering issues connections to CSGO servers are particularly poor with VM compared to andrews & arnold.

Before you go jumping ship, I'd be extra cautious that the issues you're seeing are indeed caused by the PUMA issue. There's nothing conclusive to say that it genuinely affects gaming, with plenty of people saying it does and plenty of people (including myself) saying it doesn't.

The last thing you want to do is change providers only to find your issue persists.

The OP could try ADSL on a trial and cancel if possible, before deciding.?

Yes I'm going to get sky for £18 a month and £ 25 connection which I can cancel within the cooling of period if I'm not happy.
I'm also going to keep my virgin broadband as my wife and daughter stream tv and are never off their phones and tablets. This also alowes me to download games and updates quickly then switch back for gaming.
Is there a router that could connect to both serveses without the need to switch cables? And be clever enough to route the adsl only to my pc?
Before anyone adds, my problems have been checked and persist with modem mode direct to pc to count out other home network traffic.

Yes, I use this one, it's a DualWAN Router, DrayTek Vigor 2860. It comes with or without wireless. I use SH3 in Modem Mode and the Vigor does the VDSL or in your case ADSL. Both connected at the same time for redundancy and load balancing. This setup works well for me.
