Khan to close London police desks

I seem to recall Sadiq Khan making a great deal of fuss about his predecessor's form on closing police stations during his tenure yet here we are:

Quote:

Sadiq Khan is planning to close half of London’s remaining 73 police station front counters, it emerged on Thursday.

The Mayor’s officials are drawing up a blueprint to keep just one 24-hour police station open to the public in every borough.

Four additional front counters would be retained across central London — including a new one at Paddington Green — that would open during office hours.

The Met Police and Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime have been looking at police station closures for more than six months.

He's blaming govt. cuts but I wonder what sort of fuss he'd be making now if he'd failed in his quest to become Mayor and a Tory was at the helm and doing the very same thing for the same reason... Accusations of out of touch Tories who don't care about ordinary people's lives and problems etc. etc. etc.

Quote:

When Boris Johnson cut police station front counters in 2013, Mr Khan criticised the move and suggested Londoners could be forced to report crime at police “contact points” in McDonald’s restaurants.
Khan's got what he wanted and now he's rightly going to cop the sort of flak that he's quite well used to dishing out. I hope he enjoys it.

Part of the ongoing process of cuts... going back 4 decades every small town and village had more or less a Police personal staying at a police house/accommodation (now all sold off). The Met Police has made a few quid in selling off its properties in the city.

Now the police have drones in Devon & Cornwall, Dorset to make up for the cuts made over the years.

Given the spate of acid attacks I think police cuts need to be revisited, also the rise of moped attacks. It looks like so far the actual crime rate has been stable for a number of years though.

Wouldn't really change anything.

Khan is a waste of space and slowly it will dawn on londoners from all walks of life i don't see him being reelected to the office of mayor.

The bus-hopper fare is one of the bigger changes to London travel since the flat fare for busses. He is also pushing for more control of a the commuter rail network that serves London. TFL is far better than them so that'll be good.

But for the moment his lack of 'projects' is better than the money Boris spent. Cancelling the Garden Bridge was a good decision IMO.

I wouldn't judge until a few years though and see how the revised congestion charge, commuter rails coming into TFL's hands and the expansion of the night tube pans out.

The police aren't allowed to chase mopeds apparently. Changing that might help.

My point is that it is completely impossible to be everywhere all of the time. Criminals would just wait until after any police had passed by.
