Not much pace in midfield with that formation.

England's 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign opened in emphatic fashion as Moldova were outclassed 5-0 in Chisinau.

Moldova, San Marino and other small nations shouldn't be in the world cup, instead they should have their own small nations cup or similar where they play against places like Fiji, Samoa and anywhere else with a sub-5million population.

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Have they ever got through to the finals in the last world/euro cups It must be demoralising for them to end up 5-0 or more against a team with the media describing them as whipping boys of the group..

Russ 08-09-2012 09:16

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Maybe it spurs us on more? Allows our players to have experience against top international sides? Nobody forces us to enter tournaments.

Kymmy 08-09-2012 09:20

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Yet every tournament they enter they are end up bottom (or near bottom)

It's why we have football leagues so you don't get someone like Barton Rovers playing against MU unless Barton Rovers have proved themselves and gain promotion or get through the first few rounds of the FA cup. As for experience that's what friendlies are for..

Russ 08-09-2012 09:41

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Friendlies aren't guaranteed though. And teams rarely play their best and strongest squad in a friendly. Elitism is rife in certain footballing countries but that doesn't make it right.

I did suggest small nations with a sub 5m pop.. Uruguay has never been a small nation.. Nor was I dictating entry rules.. just that there are certain countries that are lost at the bottom of international football and it would be a chance for them to have a competition on their own level instead of being the "whipping boys"

Russ 08-09-2012 10:20

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Well seeing as none of these 'lost' countries have gotten together to make such a suggestion, perhaps it should be left up to them to decide if that's what they want.

How about a 'deluxe elite' competition only for international sides that have made it to the semi finals more than once? Perhaps they'd prefer a tournament for teams at their level?

I'm sure that most of the Conference league teams in the UK wouldn't complain if they were playing against premiership sides even if they lost time and time again.. but the FA doesn't allow it..

Just that last night was a one sided football match and it's the same with most Moldova/San Marino and other small nations teams

Perhaps maybe a system that only allows teams to enter competitions based on world rankings??

If it is an issue for them, and that's an if then it should be those teams who ask for it.

Really? Really?! So how do teams go up in the rankings if they're not given the chance to perform against bigger nations?

You're really, really..in a mood this morning :p:

Losing against a bigger nation doesn't increase their rankings, playing against the lower teams give them a better chance to win and increase rankings, get to a certain point and more competitions are open to them with higher ranked teams.. It's the same with our leagues you start off at the bottom with teams equal to yourself and work your way up as Rangers is just finding out..

[joke]...perhaps it would be a good place for Wales to start ;) [/joke]

Perhaps another approach might be to lose the area restrictions on qualifying instead which could see lower EU teams playing against more equal teams? Just that San Marino ends up in a group with some of the EU's top teams where Fiji/Somoa in the oceanic group have a lot fairer chance as they're playing against local islands.. Just that it's a one sides competition on one side of the planet and totally different on the other..

The team management or the countries FA won't ask for it as it's money in their pockets, I wonder though if it would be different if you asked the players??

Russ 08-09-2012 10:50

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Wales is what I'm talking about. We went up the rankings during Gary Speed's era and were going in the right direction. Nothing wrong with the systems as it is and if it did need fixing then I'm sure the 'lesser nations' would be the first to speak out.

England for example have only made it to the semis once in 80-odd years whereas other nations get there more regularly. I'm sure if an 'elite' competition was proposed where team that got there more than once were the only one able to qualify you'd have something to say against that.

If it isn't broken (or even acknowledged as broken by those it affects) then it does not need fixing.

Conjecture to back up your theory.

Kymmy 08-09-2012 10:54

Re: World Cup road to 2014

It wasn't a theory and "wondering" isn't exactly conjecture just a few simple basic viewpoints based on the fact that Moldova and San Marino every four years are constantly put down in the media and basically have minimal chance from the very start of the contest..

The current seeding system doesn't seem to work so how about byes for the top teams and allow the smaller teams to progress..

PS.. Wales being in the top 50 ranking isn't exactly in the same league as Moldova who's 141 having dropped 4 places after playing England

Russ 08-09-2012 11:10

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Where's the incentive for lesser teams in a 'tinpot' (for that's how it would be viewed) tournament?

Kymmy 08-09-2012 11:16

Re: World Cup road to 2014

Yep it probably would but at least they can have a decent chance at winning something..

As for incentive even winning against lower teams can raise your rankings, raise them enough and you have a cross-over point as where they could enter a higher competition..

I never said it was a perfect idea or even workable but I'm sure that some modern day competitions were viewed that way when it first started and possible had similar roots ;)

Watching the match I just felt sorry for the Moldovan team and was shocked at some of the media comments

Well if you're going to win it (albeit with an illegal goal but that's by-the-by) then obviously you would get to the semi-final too. But more teams make it past there more often - that should be an ideal measure of an 'elite' tournament if there was one.

Yes so obvious you neglected to mention it, wonder why and ranking based performance would be the ideal measure imo :p: :)

By that reasoning, Brazil only made it to three semis. Seems a rather flawed way of looking at things...

Cough... Northern Ireland smallest country to qualify for more than one World Cup finals, the smallest country to win a World Cup finals match, the smallest country to have scored at a World Cup finals, and the smallest country to have reached the World Cup quarter-finals.

Trinidad and Tobago - smallest country to qualify for the World Cup finals. Sure they didn't score a single goal but if you had offered them the chance to play in the World Cup finals or play in a tournament with smaller teams do you really think they would have chosen the latter?

England make six changes from the 5-0 win over San Marino. Right-back Glen Johnson, centre-back Joleon Lescott and left-back Ashley Cole return to the defence.

Captain Steven Gerrard, back from suspension, and James Milner start in midfield, while striker Jermain Defoe is restored to the attack. Kyle Walker, Gary Cahill, Leighton Baines, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Danny Welbeck make way.
